DAY 4 IN WELLINGTON—Toothless India watch as NZ stage monumental fightback

Brief Scores—New Zealand 192 and 571-6 lead India (438) by 325 runs.

Through the course of Day 4 in the Wellington Test, the focus kept returning to Brendon McCullum as he passed milestone after milestone. A drive through the covers brought up his 150. A whip through square leg delivered his third 200, all of them against India. A powerful pull for six to the same area brought up his 250. But even as he passed these milestones in the course of a scarcely believable fight-back with BJ Watling, the predominant expression on his face was of pain.

A pain in his back. A pain in his shoulders. A pain in his knee. And the pain of knowing that though he had braved it for 12 hours, he couldn’t savour the sweetness of his achievements till his team was secure. At stumps, the New Zealand captain could afford to smile a little. They are now 325 ahead with little chance of losing a game that seemed lost yesterday.

Yesterday, India had the match with New Zealand at 94-5. Little did MS Dhoni know he would have to wait 122 overs for another wicket. BJ Watling played Watson to McCullum’s Sherlock perfectly, bailing New Zealand out of this crisis with a world-record 352 runs for the sixth wicket. Watling’s near-perfect defence of his wicket kept him at the crease for close to nine hours as he completed one of the slowest Test hundreds of all time in 297 balls.

When the frontliners failed, Dhoni brought himself on. (AP)A couple of half-chances came to India’s slip cordon and were missed. On two occasions, the cordon was so deep that thick edges didn’t carry. Mohammad Shami finally dismissed Watling second delivery with the new ball, thanks to a fast in-cutter. But India’s misery was far from over. Out came James Neesham, backing up his excellent 33 in the first innings with a half-century on debut in the second.

These are not meaningless milestones for the Black Caps. They are ranked eighth in Test cricket. The last time they’d won a series over a team that wasn’t Zimbabwe, Bangladesh or West Indies was in 2005 when they beat Sri Lanka at this very venue. Cricket’s perennial featherweights have now chanced upon an Indian team that has forgotten how to win when the ball bounces higher than the waist. Resultantly, India now face the humiliating prospect of returning from this tour without a single win.

What did MS Dhoni do wrong? He began the day in control of the game. But instead of going for New Zealand’s jugular, he went on the defensive as has been the bane of his captaincy. Half an hour after the start, he brought on Shami without any slips. The cordon continued to be frugally manned through the day and, sometimes, not at all.

Dhoni threw the towel in before the noon session was done. When the first-line pacers had failed to as much as trouble McCullum and Watling, Dhoni had to call in Virat Kohli to bowl seam-ups. Predictably, that ploy failed too, so Dhoni had to fall back to his only remaining pace option: himself. No prizes for guessing how well that worked out. So deflated was the team, New Zealand smashed 131 runs in the evening session, with McCullum on course for New Zealand’s first triple century.

Dhoni rotated his bowlers, kept adjusting his fields, even threw in an occasional one-liner to keep his boys on their toes (“Pujara ko wahan taali bajane ke liye nahin rakha”—urging Ravindra Jadeja to bowl an off-stump line). But none of it worked. Was it just one of those days? Probably not.

India haven’t won a Test away from home since 2011. They haven’t won an away series over a top-ranked team in seven years. They’re likely to return winless from the country ranked seventh in ODIs and eighth in Tests. Faced with stats like those, India must ask themselves if they want business to go on as usual. After all, this is the year they tour England, Australia and then enter the World Cup.

In the opposition camp, things are rosy. McCullum’s leadership skills, team spirit and patriotism have been questioned in the past. But the results against West Indies and India would boost their confidence when they host the World Cup next year.

India has toured New Zealand eight times for a Test series and played 21 Test matches in the “land of the long white cloud”; winning two of those series, while two others have been drawn. India have been second best in New Zealand as they have won five Tests and lost seven. Overall, the countries have played 52 Test matches – India have won 18 Tests, New Zealand 9 and the remaining 25 have ended in draws.

1967-68: A historic tour for India India won the four-match series 3-1 to register their first overseas Test series win in 12 attempts. The courageous captaincy and tactical acumen of Mansur Ali Khan Patuadi, came to the fore, as even in an away series, he decided to play to India’s strengths and play three spin bowlers.

If in the first Test at Dundein, it was Erapalli Prassana’s six second innings wickets that swung the match in India’s favour; the victory in the third Test at Wellington was thanks to the spin duo of Prasanna and Bapu Nadkarni as well as Ajit Wadekar’s magnificent century.

Prasanna was again at the forefront as he and Bishan Singh Bedi spun a web around the New Zealand batsmen at Auckland to seal a famous series win.

Kiwis complete India’s rout | New Zealand fired up | Looking back at the ODI series

Wellington:
India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said Friday that the forthcoming two-Test series will be a test of character for his young team, which was battered 4-0 by New Zealand in the five-match ODI series.

India failed to salvage some pride in the fifth and the final ODI and lost it by 87 runs here at the Westpac Stadium for their second successive ODI series loss in two months.

Despite the humiliating series loss, Dhoni backed his boys and said they have to believe in themselves to play their strokes confidently.

“From the talent point of view, these are the players. They have to back themselves to play their strokes but the execution is what is lacking. It’ll be a bigger test of character in the Test series and it will be good for our younger players,” he said.

Dhoni credited the New Zealanders for playing some good cricket and said their new ball bowlers have done well.

“Throughout this series, they’ve played very good cricket. Their new ball pair have been very good but where they’ve taken the game away is in the middle overs batting which set up their charge late in the innings, picking up 80-90 runs consistently,” he said.

New Zealand captain Brandan McCulllum said beating India, who entered the series as World No.1, made it their best series win.

McCullum was also happy with the way youngsters like Matt Henry, Hamish Bennett, Jimmy Neeshan and Corey Anderson performed against India.

“The boys worked very very hard to pull this off, especially against a tough one-day side like India. We saw Matt Henry comes in and take to it outstandingly, there was Hamish Bennett and Jimmy Neesham and the emergence of Corey Anderson as well.

“It’s been pretty pleasing to see Kane and Ross score all those runs. In all the time I’ve seen him play, Ross hasn’t been as good as he’s looked in this series. For a guy who’s young, Kane’s become one of our experienced lads and has been moving from strength to strength,” he said.

Ross Taylor, who was declared Man of the Match for his consecutive tons, feels India will come back hard in the Tests. He also lauded Kane Williamson, who has scored five fifties in a row.

“The way Williamson’s batted, five fifties in a row, has done a wonderful job for us. We play different games. I scored a little quicker and then he caught up later and 300 was always going to be difficult to score.”

“It’s a good sign that the new players come in and do well. Henry has a good future after this performance. India will come back hard in the Tests and we’ll be ready them but we will enjoy this victory tonight,” he said.

ODI rout fires up New Zealand for India Tests

WELLINGTON – A fired up New Zealand on Saturday turned their sights towards the upcoming two Tests against India, bursting with confidence after exceeding expectations by dominating the one-day series.

The first Test starts in Auckland next Thursday, with New Zealand already plotting to continue the barrage of short-pitched deliveries which the Indian batsmen struggled to contend with in the ODIs.

“Even in our wildest dreams we didn’t think we could win 4-0 against such a quality side,” coach Mike Hesson said.

“We know it’s a different format (Tests), and there’ll be a few new guys, but we’ll definitely take some confidence into the Tests.”

The gulf between the two sides on the world rankings table may be vast but New Zealand showed it mattered little as they wrapped up the one-day series with an emphatic 87-run victory in the final match in Wellington on Friday.

In the process India, whose best performance was to tie the third match, dropped from first to second in the rankings while New Zealand raised their standing from a modest eighth to seventh.

It is a similar margin at Test level where India are number two with New Zealand in eighth place, but Hesson said his players proved in the ODIs that was no barrier.

“It’s all very well having plans but you need quality players to execute them and we certainly saw that. It was as good as it gets really from a coach’s point of view,” he said.

“A number of different players stood up throughout the series at key times,” he added, singling out the imperious form of Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor who will reprise their roles at three and four in the Test batting line up.

Williamson became the fourth New Zealander to score a half-century in five consecutive ODIs, while Taylor produced back-to-back centuries for only the fourth time by a New Zealander in a one-day series.

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum hailed his side’s ruthless streak with short-pitched bowling, built on the blueprint of bowling coach Shane Bond, and warned India there would be no let up in the Tests.

“It’s something that’s Shane’s pretty hot on,” McCullum said. “He’s keen to see our guys hostile and aggressive with ball in hand and it’s certainly a tactic we’ll look to employ in the Test series”

But India’s repeated failures trying to handle the sort-pitched delivery did not mean they would abandon the hook shot, according to captain Mahendara Singh Dhoni, who wants his batsmen to take a positive approach into the Tests.

“At times they (New Zealand) bowled really well but at the same time we have to back ourselves to play the shots, the kind of cricket, that we’re known for,” he said.

“You may lose a few games but it’s also important to see the kind of attitude you bring and try to play aggressive cricket.

“Even if you get out you get out. What’s important is to have a positive intent right from the start.”
